In our editorial interns final post, she tells you all the things you shouldnt waste your time worrying about in this time of inevitable worriesgraduation. Hi all, Today is my last day as an intern at .à Because theyââ¬â¢re promoting me to an EXECUTIVE POSITION. Hah, just kidding. Theyââ¬â¢re kicking me out.à My internship has run its course and now we must part ways (sigh). Iââ¬â¢ve been doing a lot of thinking lately. As I walk away from this position and from my previous college lifestyle, I canââ¬â¢t help but feel like scissors are snipping at the ties that connected me to these things. Many things are finished and done. And it feels a little like that painful moment someone harshly yanks the blinds open after youââ¬â¢ve been sitting in a dark room for 5 hours. Life after collegeâ⬠¦is a really strange thing. Iââ¬â¢d like to equate it to a baby birdââ¬â¢s first flight. That moment you leave college is the same moment someone kicks you square in the back. You start to freefall downwards and itââ¬â¢s exhilarating but scary. You donââ¬â¢t know how to flap your wings or gain altitude because youââ¬â¢ve never done it before, but youââ¬â¢re trying with all your might to do something- anything. You know that you are capable of flight, you can feel it as the adrenaline rushes through you. I think we are all humming Tom Petty in our heads right now. When we leave college, weââ¬â¢re free for the first time. No homework, no essays, no school responsibilities. No strict guidance, no tunnel vision, no more college microcosm. We can take our lives in any direction we choose to. But that doesnââ¬â¢t mean we necessarily know how to handle the situation or understand it fully. That doesnââ¬â¢t mean that weââ¬â¢re going to know how to grasp the real world off the bat, or even comprehend it. Weââ¬â¢re thrown into it, and told to make it work. We know we can because a lot of people can. We know we can because we have a desire to and that desire fuels us. But weââ¬â¢re young. Iââ¬â¢m not talking about age. Iââ¬â¢m talking about our understanding of the world and of who we are. Weââ¬â¢re young. So, it seems, the freefall is the only way we can prompt self growth, but itââ¬â¢s definitely not the most comfortable of feelings. Iââ¬â¢m undeniably in this free fall right now. Iââ¬â¢m actually writing to you as I pummel toward the earth. In the past couple of weeks, Iââ¬â¢ve done a lot of worrying. A whole lot of worrying. To me, it makes perfect sense. New world, new life, new opportunities, and decisions that need to be madeâ⬠¦these are all things that bring their own baggage- their own sets of worries and stressors. Throw ââ¬Ëem all together and youââ¬â¢ve got one huge, heavy mess. Thereââ¬â¢s a good chance this will happen to you at some point, so Iââ¬â¢m going to go ahead and help you through it. There are some things that donââ¬â¢t need to be worried about. But we worry about them because we donââ¬â¢t realize weââ¬â¢re worrying about things that donââ¬â¢t need to be worried about. Letââ¬â¢s pretend like that sentence was really clear and not a run-on at all. Here are some things you shouldnââ¬â¢t waste your time worrying about, like I did. Donââ¬â¢t worry about failing. If youââ¬â¢re chasing something- a goal, a dream, a degree, a career- just chase it, with all the gusto you have. Donââ¬â¢t let your mind be boggled by the potentiality of failing. It will distract. You likely wonââ¬â¢t fail. And if you do, wellâ⬠¦failure is also a good thing. It teaches. The best lessons are learnt from failing at something. Either you succeed at your dream, and move on, or you fail at it, and move on. Both of these things will leave you more knowledgeable about yourself, about life, and about what you really want from both of those things. Helloâ⬠¦this is a win-win. Donââ¬â¢t worry about what your life is going to look like in 25 years. Mini van. Dog. Three kids. A house. Early retirement. Itââ¬â¢s good to have an idea of what you want your life to look like, and itââ¬â¢s good to take action to make those things more of a possibility. But stop stressing over them. Most of our plans are just rough drafts or sketches anyways. Things rarely happen the way we expect or plan on them to. So why dwell? Silly goose. Donââ¬â¢t worry about things that havenââ¬â¢t happened yet. ââ¬Å"If I donââ¬â¢t get this job then Iââ¬â¢ll be unemployed and Iââ¬â¢ll lose all of my friends because I wonââ¬â¢t be able to go out anymore and Iââ¬â¢ll just have to hang out with a dog and talk to it and Iââ¬â¢ll eventually lose all my money and my apartment and my ability to remain hygienic and basically my life is going to be OVER.â⬠Yes, letââ¬â¢s not do this. Half of the things we worry about are things that havenââ¬â¢t come into fruition yet. Theyââ¬â¢re thoughts. Little puffs of air that we catch in jars and then stare at until our eyeballs hurt. Thereââ¬â¢s nothing there. Stop staring. Stop it! Be in the present, not trapped in the different futures youââ¬â¢ve managed to paint. If something worry-worth actually occurs, worry about it then, but only then. Donââ¬â¢t worry about what your friendships and relationships will look like as your life moves forward. Just keep in touch with your friends and loved ones. Those who remain in your life are meant to, those who donââ¬â¢t might turn up again later or might not. We canââ¬â¢t control these things except by how much effort we put forth. So show that you care and love these special people, but donââ¬â¢t worry that theyââ¬â¢ll leave you. That just makes for messes, drama, and crying. The kinds of emotion you feel during the gut-wrenching, tear jerking portion of a rom-com. Yuck. Donââ¬â¢t worry about finding a perfect career thatââ¬â¢ll last you a lifetime. This is just silly. In life, we change constantly, and so do our interests. Itââ¬â¢s not really probable to assume that a career you pick now will make you happy forever. In all likelihood, it wonââ¬â¢t. In order for you to actually succeed at and enjoy your career, you will need to find work based off of what you feel in the present- whatââ¬â¢s driving you now. So, with that in mind, thereââ¬â¢s no need to worry about finding the perfect career thatââ¬â¢ll last forever. Just find yourself a path that feels right for right now. Clinton showed his concern for reform in word, but not in deed. Similarly, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) was formed following the passage of Title VIII to receive housing complaints, but was not given to authority to act on them. This allowed the government to "do something" about unfair housing without any real action (Judd, 1999, p. 136). In fact, according to Giroux, the overall effect of modern conservatism has been to silence "any discussion of race in mainstream national politics by insisting on colorblind public policy" (2 004, p. 179). There are several instances in which the federal government has specifically shirked its responsibility to remedy racial inequalities. This was very apparent during the Reagan administration, when the momentum of the Civil Rights Movement came "to a standstill" (Fairclough, 2001, p. 332). Rather than citing governmental intervention as a possible solution, Regan claimed that it had been a problem, and went on to denounce student busing and attempt to eliminate the Department of Education (Patterson, 2001, p. 171), successfully pulling federal government away from domestic issues that sorely needed attention. His administration further claimed that "big government handouts had corrupted black communities by creating generations of cheats characterized by laziness, drug addiction, sexual excess, and a general taste for criminality and violence" (Giroux, 2004, p. 189). Even the Democratic Clinton administration rolled back government responsibility with its budget compromise of 1997, in which Clinton cut Medicare and Medicaid and endorsed tax cuts that mainly benefited wealthy Americans. The best way to explain the difference between the two concepts is by examples to differentiate and get a clearer understanding of the difference between the two concepts. This paper will define aggregate and community giving a brief support from current literature. The paper will also examine and give the differences between the two terms plus describe and identify the chosen aggregate based on the health issue of heart disease. The Christoffelââ¬â¢s three stages of a conceptual framework for advocacy will be described. Then each stage as an aggregate selected is described. Community and Aggregate Terms Defines In community health care nursing, aggregate is defined as the whole population, which is being used to describe a given environment. The term aggregate is used to refer or define a group of people in a society who are believed to have similar or common problems and challenges in their life. These people should share similar characteristics and also they should be living in the same area. The group which is to be described should be suffering from the same medical or health care problem and should be in search of similar medication or health care services. Aggregate in nursing setting literally is defined as the entire, whole, or the sum of a given group with similar problems, (Nies & McEwen, 2010). Differences Between Aggregate and Community There are those people who use the term community when referring to aggregate. Aggregate and community are two different concepts but are closely connected. Community in nursing health care setting is used to refer to the general population in a given area. A community is the entireà population that includes the sick and healthy population. When discussing about the aggregate, we refer to the population, which is experiencing a health condition along with those who are responsible of taking care of the group that are sick. The entire population that comprise of healthy and sick in the society is referred to as the community, (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2009). Identified Aggregate and Description as a health Issue There are those people who use the term community and the term aggregate to refer to the same thing or to mean something the same. There stand significant differences between the term community and the term aggregate. When we talk of aggregate, we are referring to a population, which has similar medical problems or challenges and live in the same region or geographical area. For the community, itââ¬â¢s the general population that involves the sick and those who are not sick. In this case, Adults suffering from heart disease in Illinois is an aggregate population that is used to define the current health care challenges. In the state of Illinois, specifically the Sangamon county community, evidence shows that heart disease is the number one reason for death of adults in the entire state of Illinois and in Sangamon county (Illinois Department of Public Health [IDPH], 2010). Christoffelââ¬â¢s Three Stages of a Conceptual Framework for Advocacy Christoffelââ¬â¢s three stages for advocacy include information, strategy, and action. The stages take place concurrently. The first stage, information, includes naming, describing, and measuring the public health problem. The second stage, strategy, involves using the information in the first stage to develop a plan of action for the promotion of public health. The stage includes. This stage involves the communication of information to the public and health care professionals. Groups can then be assembled to focus on the issue and plan needed changes. Strategies can include public education messages, campaigns, and press conferences. This action may involve fund raising, persuading individuals to change their lives, and legislation involvement. To achieve action, changes in mindsets, behaviors, and resource provision. Public health advocacy transpires at two levels: the individual/family level and in the larger community level (Christoffel,à 2000). Advocacy that focuses on the interpersonal or intrapersonal level is frequently referred to as patient advocacy. Patient advocacy involves any ââ¬Å"activity that benefits a patientâ⬠(Torrey, 2010). It can apply individual patient care, groups that develop policies, and legislation changes to improve the health care system for patients. There are many examples of patient advocacy organizations, which include government groups such as the Center for Disease Control, American Heart Association, and individual patient advocates who act as healthcare assistants (Torrey, 2010). Applying Each Stage as an advocate for the Aggregate The first stage in the Christoffelââ¬â¢s advocacy framework talks about the information factor. The information names, describes, and measures the public health problem. When discussing the issue of heart disease. This stage can be used to describe the disease process, the risk factors involved, and itââ¬â¢s complications. During this stage, the private sector or the government sector get involved so as to develop the research needed that can be used to measure the public health problem. Evidence shows that this stage is relevant simply because it assists develop all statistical information and results that are suitable in order to address the advocacy challenge. The first stage in Christoffelââ¬â¢s advocacy framework is to develop a research on heart disease within the society. This stage will help develop relevant information on the mortality rate related to heart disease and/or its complications (Christoffel, 2000). The second stage in Christoffelââ¬â¢s advocacy framework is the stage of strategy. Having collected relevant information about the problem of health care issue, the second stage helps work on the information so as to understand the problem completely. In this stage, the central idea is to get results that will help come up with some strategies on how to approach the health problem. Experts in respective fields translate the research findings so that proper results are developed to develop a plan of action (Christoffel, 2011). The third stage in Christoffelââ¬â¢s advocacy framework is the stage of action. Strategies, which are developed in the second stage on how to handle theà health issue are implemented and monitored in the final stage of Christoffelââ¬â¢s advocacy framework (Christoffel, 2011). It is alleged that when strategies in stage two are implemented and monitored they provide the best results in respect to the health care environment, (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2009). Public health messages on the news and posters can help educate the community about heart disease. There are also local physicians who provide free learning seminars on specific diseases. Raising funds to help with campaign measures can also be implemented during this stage. Legislation can be educated on the health issue to convince policy makers to get involved. The main part of this stage is action. The goal is to influence people to change specific habits that will reduce the risk of developing heart disease. Dickens uses Pips deterioration from an innocent boy into an arrogant gentleman and his redemption as a good-natured person to illustrate the idea that unrealistic hopes and expectations can lead to undesirable traits. In Dickenss novel, Jaggers has his office in a dismal area near Newgate Prison in London. For, much like a prison cell, the room is dark, lit only by a patched skylight. The walls are greasy from the many prisoner/clients who have stood against it as they are faced by Mr. Jaggers. When they are sent out abruptly, they must sidle along the wall to reach the doorway, as the office is so narrow. Mr. Jaggers holds the same relations to many people, but having worked so long with the low, criminal element of London, Jaggers himself is much like an emotionally disconnected jailer who has the ability to abruptly dispose of people. His office definitely reflects his personality, in that thereââ¬â¢s no warmth, or attachment to humanity or the outside world. (write more about what his office is like) Lawyers are often thought to be aggressive and rude. In Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens, Mr. Jaggers is no different. From the first time we meet him, Jaggers comes across as self-important, wealthy and too busy for sensitivity. Jaggers arrange for a carriage to take Pip from his hometown to London. Pip is supposed to meet Jaggers at his law office. When he arrives at Jaggers office there are many people waiting outside to speak with Jaggers about their cases or about the cases of their relatives. Mr. Jaggers is of hand to all of them. At one point, a man starts a sentence by telling Mr. Jaggers We thought Jaggers immediately responded by saying You thought! I think for you; thats enough for you. He is similarly rude to two women in the crowd, and completely ignores a man who is hopping up and down in desperation to get Jaggers attention. This scene gives us a good idea of Jaggers self-importance. The desperation of the people around him and the way that they almost worship him reveals why Mr. Jaggers thinks so highly of himself.
